Harness Kent's beautiful sunshine to generate and store your own power. Start saving today using clean, eco-friendly energy.

How Solar Energy Works

Solar energy works by harnessing the power of the sun's radiant energy and transforming it into usable electricity. The process begins with photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, which are comprised of numerous solar cells. These cells contain semiconductor materials like silicon that react to sunlight by creating an electric current. When sunlight strikes the solar cells, it excites the electrons within the material, causing them to flow and generate direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then directed through an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity, the type of electricity that powers our homes and businesses. The AC electricity is either consumed immediately within the property or fed into the grid for use by others, depending on the energy needs and setup. Solar energy systems may also incorporate batteries to store excess energy for use during cloudy periods or at night, enhancing energy reliability and independence. Overall, solar power offers a clean, renewable, and sustainable way to generate electricity while reducing our reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimising environmental impact.

Why Solar?

Installing Solar Panels

Clean and Sustainable Power

Solar energy is a clean, renewable resource that leaves no carbon footprint. By harnessing the power of the sun, you contribute to a healthier planet by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependency on fossil fuels. With solar panels on your property, you're taking a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Solar Panels on Roof

Cost Savings and Energy Independence

Say goodbye to rising energy bills and hello to long-term savings. Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, and any excess energy can be fed back into the grid or stored for later use. This means you can potentially earn money through feed-in tariffs and avoid the volatility of energy prices. With solar, you're in control of your energy production and consumption, achieving true energy independence.

Great Savings & Return on Investment

A typical residential solar installation offers returns on your investment between 15% and 30%  each year! Your money is working so much harder on your roof than in your bank!

Investing in solar panels not only benefits your pocket; it also enhances the value of your property. Energy-efficient homes and businesses are increasingly sought after, adding value and making your property more attractive to potential buyers and tenants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Solar is still a new and exciting opportunity. Here's some of the questions we're often asked...

  • What is solar panel installation?
Solar panel installation is the process of placing photovoltaic panels on rooftops, ground-mounted structures, or other suitable locations to capture sunlight and convert it into usable electricity.
  • How do solar panels work?
Solar panels work by utilising photovoltaic cells that absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts this DC electricity into alternating current (AC), which can be used to power homes and businesses.
  • Is my location suitable for solar panel installation?
Most locations with access to sunlight can benefit from solar panel installation. Factors like roof orientation, shading, and local weather conditions are considered during a site assessment to determine the suitability and efficiency of solar panels.
  • How much space do I need for solar panels?
The space required for solar panels depends on your energy needs and the efficiency of the panels. On average, a 1 kWp solar panel system requires around 8-10 square meters of roof space
  • What are the financial benefits of installing solar panels?
Installing solar panels can lead to significant long-term financial benefits. You can save on electricity bills, potentially earn money through excess energy sales, and benefit from government incentives and tax credits that promote renewable energy adoption.
  • How much does solar panel installation cost?
The cost of solar panel installation varies based on factors like system size, location, equipment quality, and labor. It's important to consider both upfront costs and long-term savings when evaluating the investment.
  • Will solar panels work during cloudy days or at night?
While solar panels are most efficient in direct sunlight, they can still generate electricity on cloudy days due to diffused sunlight. At night, your property would typically rely on grid electricity or stored energy from batteries if you have a battery storage system.
  • Do I need to replace my roof before installing solar panels?
It's recommended to evaluate your roof's condition before installation. While solar panels can extend the life of your roof by providing protection, it's often more convenient to install panels on a roof that doesn't need replacement in the near future.
  • How long does a solar panel installation take?
The installation timeline depends on the size of the system and complexity of the installation. On average, residential installations can take just a few days.
  • Do I need to maintain solar panels?
Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning and occasional inspections to ensure they're free of debris or damage are usually sufficient. Most reputable installation companies offer warranties and maintenance services.
  • How can I track my solar energy?
Most installations include a data-logging app that shows how much electricity you've generated, used, stored and even returned to the grid
